Company History
Buck's Fruit Company has been around since the late 1940's, and though many folks know all about our famous salads, too many haven't heard the whole story.
When Ray Roy returned home from WWII in 1947, he went back to work for Fred Caudill, who owned the produce company in Huntington that Buck worked for before he was deployed. When Mr. Caudill passed away, Buck stepped in, and with one beat up pick-up, and a dedication to quality produce and quality service, Buck's Fruit Company was born.
The original installation was located under the old 6th Street Bridge in Huntington, with several wholesale vendors and a farmer's market. When new bridge construction got underway in the early 70's, the market was forced to relocate, and moved to the 7th Avenue strip, where several produce companies, including Buck's, remain today.
Initially, Buck opted to lease from a local vendor rather than buy a permanent space. However, with the local economy in a major boom, and the reputation Buck had built on quality and service, the business quickly out-grew its space. To meet the demands of his growing customer base, Buck purchased the building at 341 7th Avenue in Huntington, where the business is located today. Buck continued to provide the best in product and service until he died in 1991. Buck's widow, Carolyn Roy, took up the business and continues it to this day.
In April of 2000, an electrical fire consumed the facility, and Carolyn considered getting out of the business. But when she received letters, visits to her home, and word of mouth from her regular cole slaw customers, she decided to rebuild and reopened in September of 2000. Shortly after reopening, Randy Blatt came on board as a partner in the business, and together Randy and Carolyn have expanded Buck's in several ways: Our Down-Home Salads division has increased to include over 50 fabulous products made on-site, we have increased our delivery service capabilities to include schools, restaurants, and other organizations, as well as adding our Down-Home Catering department. We are also in the process of producing a line of delicious edible creations.
